Effective and ethical communication can lead to better health outcomes and more satisfied patients and physicians. Communication skills can improve with intention, preparation, and awareness, resulting in more trusting relationships. This course shares communication best practices, provides skill-building tools, and provides how-tos for tough conversations, such as breaking bad news or offering an apology.

1. Define effective communication as it relates to the patient-physician relationship;
2. Identify reasons to improve ethical patient-physician communication;
3. Explore methods like emotional intelligence and motivational interviewing (MI) as it plays a significant role in professional satisfaction and the physician-patient relationship;
4. Recognize communication barriers to effective patient-physician communication such as the health literacy of patients and their families and discuss strategies to overcome these barriers; and
5. Describe steps for breaking bad news and implement at least one strategy to improve patient-physician communication skills.
